Subterranean Homesick Blues

Postcard, dated May 18, 1968. Printed on the back:

Showing the Texas School Book Depository Building (Hertz sign on roof) where bullet was fired that killed President Kennedy. Then, showing left to right: Hall of Records Building, old Courthouse, and new Courthouse. Underpass on left is the one the Kennedy caravan passed through en route to Parkland Hospital where the President died.

Written:

Dearest Ann,

I am in Dallas on a National Convention for nurses - 10,000 nurses are here.

My traveling mate and also roommate from home is more fun. We have been laughing until we ache all over. We leave here Friday 1 PM for home. It has been really fun and educational.

Love,
Anna

Found in "The Subterraneans" by Jack Kerouac. Published by The Grove Press, 1966.

Here's what the underpass and surrounding buildings look like today.

  1. I have not read the book, but I'm assuming the recipient was - reading the book. Is this an "underground" novel? I've led a sheltered life.
