Pressed Into Service

I don't usually post the random pressed and dried flowers and plants I find in books; I come across them so often and there are so many more interesting things to share with you. This particular batch of flora was too much to resist.

The book is volume five of "The New Testament with Commentary and Critical Notes by Adam Clarke" published by B. Waugh and T. Mason, 1833.

Here's what I found inside:

There was another volume from the same set in the box, and yet that one didn't have a single plant inside.

Here's How

Just wanted to share something a little different today - here's a 1941 book of cocktail recipes bound in wood boards.

It's called "Here's How: Mixed Drinks" compiled and edited by W.C Whitfield and published by Three Mountaineers, Asheville NC.

Merry Christmas

Here's a Christmas card from author Booth Tarkington.

The writing on the reverse side is tough to decipher, I enlisted the help of Twitter and here's what we came up with:

Dear Flora,

This sends you & yours our very happy wish for the New Year and always -

Affectionately yours - Susanah
(in pencil)

To Flora Reynolds Xmas 1939

Tarkington's second wife was Susanah Keifer Robinson, according to Wikipedia.

"Flora" could be "Floss," a nickname for Florence.

Foolproof

Recipe for pie crust:

4 cups all purpose flour
1 3/4 cups vegetable shortening
1 tablespoon sugar
2 teaspoons salt
1 egg
1 tablespoon vinegar
1/2 cup H20

With a fork, mix together first four ingredients.  In a separate dish, beat remaining ingredients.  Combine the 2 mixtures, stirring with a fork until all ingredients are moistened. Then, with hands, mold dough in a ball.

Chill at least 15 mins before rolling into desired shape. Dough can be left in the refrig. up to 3 days. Or, it can be frozen until ready to use. Makes 2 9" double-crust pies and one 9" shell.

Note: Dough will remain soft in the refrig. and can be taken out and rolled at once.

Goodness Of Heart

I'm not sure what this little piece of ephemera started out as, but it ended up as a fine bookmark. It's marked "Art Supplement - Buffalo Courier" and has the following verse:

A photograph shows
One's features, in part,
But it never can picture
One's goodness of heart.

Pre X-rays, right?
