Family Portrait

Over the years, I've discovered that the best bets for finding forgotten bookmarks are old Bibles and dictionaries. I purchased this leatherbound beauty yesterday; a man from Connecticut was passing through and had a small pile of books rescued from a damp church basement. There were bits and pieces in each of the books he brought in, but this 1889 Swedish-language Bible had some real beauties:

I have one of these but in Finnish. I didn't get so many forgotten bookmarks in it, though. Mine says 1890 inside the title page, but there's a photo insert of some sculptures in the middle after the portraits of the apostles that is dated 1897.

Does anyone know where I might be able to get replica clasps for these old Bibles? I'm missing the hinged half of both of them.

Wow! A great find in the Bible itself and the goodies inside are an added bonus. Congrats!

This is fantastic! Such beauty, inside and out! I think this is my favorite post of yours yet!

I've recently suggested your blog to another book-loving friend of mine, too.

Like the others: great post (one of the best) and fascinating find. How interesting that the bible had pages meant for family portraits. Never heard of that before. Wonder where that custom came from. Thanks!

Wow what an interesting find. Although I know it's a bible, the book looks like a spell book from an adventure movie.
