It's Winner Time

Sorry for the delay, folks. I had actual work to do. Imagine that.

To make up for it, I'll be selecting three winners. I'll try and get in touch with you if I can find contact information, but if you don't hear from me, please email me at fb@forgottenbookmarks to arrange shipping.

OK, let's start with third place, which is a lovely two volume set of "Anna Karenina" in slipcase with fancy onion skin jackets.

Third Place Winner: Julie (Okami) - who entered on the site. Here's a pic of your prize:

Not too shabby.

Second Place is a fine matched set of four volumes, "Les Miserables" by Hugo, Shakespeare's Works, "War and Peace" by Tolstoy, and Thomas Carlyle's Works.

Second Place Winner: Laura Horst, who entered via Facebook.

Finally, first place. Obviously, the prize will include the four books already featured on our contest page ("The Pathfinder," "The Pioneers," and the Emerson and Dumas Modern Library editions). In addition, I'm going to throw in an 1859 first edition of Tennyson's "Idyls of the King." Here it is, it's a beauty:

Ok, the winner of the last contest of 2009 is:

Martha, who entered via the website.

There are your winners.
Now that we've got that business taken care of, I just wanted to take a few moments to thank every one who enters the contests, comments on the posts and on Facebook, chats on Twitter... sincerely, thanks for making all of this so much fun. I hope to run bigger and better contests next year, so please keep an eye on the site. I'll still be posting regularly, but if I don't talk to you along the way, have a fantastic holiday.

Winner

First, I want to thank all who entered. All told, there were over 200 entries. Not too shabby.

I used my old technique of pasting all names from all websites (Facebook, Twitter, Blogger comments, reddit) into a text editor so they all had their own line number... went to random.org and it spit out number 44, who happens to be Jessica, who entered via Facebook.

Jessica, I have already sent you a message on Facebook, so check it out.

Thanks again everyone, and I think this is how I'll do the giveaways from now on - winners announced every Monday with escalating prizes. Seemed to work well.

See you all tomorrow with a new forgotten bookmark.

Yet Another Contest - UPDATE #3: All Prizes Taken

Claire is our first winner. Congrats.

Mr. Burns is number two.

Jack is number three. Thanks to all who entered, and keep an eye in the mail for your books.

I'm hoping this one will be the best yet.

Here are the rules:

Further down in this post, there will an image containing 16 smaller images. These were little snapshots taken from various posts on the site. Hopefully you'll recognize some right away; others you may have to browse around the site a bit to find. I tried to concoct a game that would take some time to figure out. Build some suspense. Anway - on to the prizes:

The first person to email me the correct corresponding URLs (links) to all 16 images will win this fabulous prize:

"Old Curiosity Shop' by Charles Dickens - this is a nice and clean Rand McNally edition, gilt decoration and lettering on cover and spine, gilt top edge. No date, circa 1905.

The second person to email me the correct corresponding URLs (links) to all 16 images will win this pretty OK prize:

Two matching volumes from Thomas Y. Crowell, "The Poetical Works of Elizabeth Barrett Browning" and "Poems of Robert Browning." Both columes are marked as "Astor Editions," and are from 1900 or so, no date indicated.

The third person to email me the correct corresponding URLs (links) to all 16 images will win this humble but still enjoyable prize:

"Ivanhoe" by Sir Walter Scott, published by Thomas Nelson, 1909. Blue flexible leather cover, gilt decoration on spine. A little worn, but hey, it's 100 years old - and free.

To email me, simply use the CONTACT link above, or click here.
Here's the image. Click to enlarge. If you have any questions, find me on Twitter, I'll be working at my desk for a good bit. Good hunting -

Giveaway, Part II

Today we are giving away this vintage copy of "The Last of the Mohicans" by James Fenimore Cooper. This volume of the Leatherstocking Tales was published by F.M. Lupton Co. in New York. No date, circa 1890s.

Here are the simple rules: one of the forgotten bookmarks posted here on the site was a photo of a casket. The first person to identify the college or university mentioned in that post gets the book. Please post your answers in the comments section so everyone can see that you were the winner. Thanks -

Contest Day

I had a lot of fun giving stuff away yesterday through Twitter, thought I would continue today.

Here's what's up for grabs:

Nice vintage copy of "Vanity Fair" published by Thomas Nelson and Sons, circa 1900. Part of the New Century Library series, which featured smaller sizes and thinner paper.

Also included in the giveaway will be the four leaf clover featured in this post from a few days ago. You know I had to give that one away today - if not now, when?

Before we get started, yes, I'll ship it anywhere, for free. Alabama, Switzerland, New Zealand, Texas... you get the picture.

As for the rules, I don't want to make you all jump through hoops, nor can I figure out some savvy contest that will pull in web traffic all day. I don't give stuff away for that reason, so here are the simple contest rules: Just leave a comment on why you'd like this item, or why you enjoy Forgotten Bookmarks, or what you think can make the site better. I'll pick the winner from the comments section somewhat at random (I have a 1-10 number in mind, whoever posts in that particular spot will win). That's it.

I have a backup prize just in case things go haywire.
Good luck.

ONE more thing... I will check the comments around noon or so (Eastern US), I have some bookstore work that can't wait.

UPDATE: Hey, great response. The number I had in mind was 3 (the number of posts I was hoping for) so good job everyone, you exceeded my expectations. I'll try and post another giveaway tomorrow if time allows.  preludetochaos, I will message you on twitter.

Winner

We got one extra entry last night at the deadline - thanks to everyone who entered, it was fantastic seeing all these great items. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this stuff is fascinating...

...back to the matter at hand - the winner. I received this the first day of the contest, and I loved the back story. Here it is:

Crossword

I got a call from a patron looking for his lost lost bookmark while at work today. His sister made it for him for his high school graduation. It's over 24 years old! He was really distressed about forgetting it and very excited that I was able to find it for him. It was found in Clive Cussler's "Arctic Drift".

Thanks for the entry, Melissa. I will send you out an email later today so I can send you your prize.

Melissa actually entered two bookmarks, and both were great. She did a great job of keeping the entries in the FB style; interesting backdrop to the image, proper paragraph format, everything... if I didn't know any better, I would think she's been working here at FB for years.
Here is her second entry, just for fun:

No Petting

Note. Written:

Love,
Your bladder infected bedmate

Thanks again! Melissa, keep an eye out for that email.

Contest Ends Tomorrow

Our first giveaway will end tomorrow as I announce the winner. I've received seven entries so far, which is about seven more than I expected. The submission deadline will be tonight at midnight (Eastern US time).

For the details, check out the original post.

Thanks!
