Knowledge and Skill

Scrap of paper, possibly taken from a book, with the following quote:

There are two most valuable possessions which no search warrant can get at, which no execution can take away, and which no reverse of fortune can destroy; they are what a man puts in his head - knowledge, and into his hands - skill.

The quote is from Hiram Sibley.

Found in "Percy Bysshe Shelley" by John A. Symonds. Published by Harpers, no date listed.

  1. I know you get this comment a lot on posts that feature old handwriting. But this person really does have a beautiful hand! I suspect he or she was much admired for it at the time.

  2. mejaka, it is quite nice, a little too nice. I believe it was printed as part of a book and removed.

  3. Unusually inaccurate for a quotable quote too, isn't it.

  4. This is a beautiful sample of Spencerian writing. As perfect as it looks, I'd bet money it was hand lettered. Such maxims were often used for practice.
