Double Play

Film negative.

Found in "Too Much Happiness" by Alice Munro. Published by Vintage, 2009.

I had to see what the photos were, but the negative was pretty damaged. There were two photos on this portion of the film, one came out OK, the other not so much:

It's obviously a baseball game, the end of one by the looks of the players congregating on the infield. I spotted the Yankee logo behind home plate, but there weren't many more clues to go by. I can't really make out the scoreboard in the center of the photo nor can I see any players from the other team.

I looked a little closer, and noticed there are a bunch of police officers on the field, as well as the festive red white and blue bunting along the upper decks - I'm guessing this was a postseason game. I am 99% sure this is from the old Yankee Stadium.

The second photo wasn't much help at all, as it was very distorted.

There are cops standing in line along the first and third base lines... I am assuming it's some playoff or World Series game, but it could also be the farewell to the old stadium, depending on the date of the film (which we cannot determine, I guess).

I believe that is Game 2 of the 1998 World Series.
- The shape of the tier is unmistakably the old Yankee Stadium. I recognized it immediately.
- The ribbon scoreboard shown between the tiers is an older version. It was replaced with a hi-tech version some time in the 2000s, so it'd guess it's at least 2005 or older.
- The logos on the field in front of the dugouts look like the 1998 or 1999 WS logo. See: http://www.sportslogos.net/team.php?id=484
- Of those two series, there were 4 games played at Yankee Stadium. Games 1 and 2 in 98 and games 3 and 4 in 99. Yankees won all four with scores of 6-9, 3-9 5-6, and 1-4 respectively (away team listed first).
- It looks to me on the scoreboard like the away team scored 3 runs. Ergo, Game 2 of 98.

EXCELLENT work, Bob.

If that's true, I was at that game... El Duque started.

The photo looks like it was take from the upper upper reaches of left field, near the foul pole. I was on the other side of the stadium, way up with my back against the concrete top of the building above first base.
