  3. Okay, and here's the stupid question. Do you suppose this author really did 'hide' at night for the sheer joy of being able to spend hours upon hours in the library after hours?

    Too cool.

  4. Any Cuyler Reynolds book is a find but one with an inscription from him? Wow - I have copies of many of his books that are used to research my family's roots in upstate New York.

  5. The inscription is priceless, but I have to wonder if the inscriber physically dined with the people named, or simply read their writings while he ate the meals he hid in the stacks. And not to be picky, but the document in the book isn't the Last Will, but a Notice To Heirs that the will was about to be probated. Asel Steere must've been an heir and used the notice for a bookmark.

    Love this blog!

  6. Matches in a library? Horror!

I suppose in those days you could smoke a pipe in a library, and there were probably oil lamps.

  7. "Last Will" was more catchy title than "Notice to Heirs." :D

  8. The whimsical tone to the inscription so beautifully illuminates the romantic embrace often felt in libraries.
