War Is

Found this large photo. There was a bit of very faded writing on the back, I cleaned it up and enhanced as best I could:

Best I can do is "War is Hell Mail?? (????)"

Found in "Atlas of Medieval and Modern History" by William R. Shepherd. Published by Henry Holt, 1932.

  1. I'm seeing "War is Hell (hell crossed out) Hail" and then what I think is a date in parentheses. Perhaps 1940.

  2. When I was reading the back, I saw the last bit as a date as well.

    (1919)

  4. It's "War is [Hell crossed out] Hail (haha)", not a date.

  5. I don't see that word as "is". I see it as a number, either 13 or 19.

  6. There is a book called "Shorty McCabe gets the Hail(1919)" -- maybe someone was making a reference to that?

  7. I see "War is Hell (hell crossed out) Hail (1919)".

But I also see that the "is" looks a little like an "18"...not that that would make much sense...

  8. There is a dot over the 'i' in 'is' which makes it an 'i', not a '1'. Also, compare it with the 'i' in 'Hail', the only difference is the size. In the parens, the 'H's are light but you can just pick out the crossbars. Plus, it makes sense he would say 'haha' after bad joke like that.
