Farandnear

I have decided that I don't feature as many bookplates as I would like. Here's one I came across yesterday:

 "From the Books at Farandnear."

The book is "When Valmond Came to Pontiac: The Story of a Lost Napoleon" by Gilbert Parker. Published by Stone & Kimball, 1895.

If you like bookplates as much as I do, check out my collection on Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/forgottenbkmrks/bookplates/

I wanted to share this fantastic old bookplate, dated 1840.

The book is "Abrégé des Vies des Pères des Déserts D'Orent" by Antoine Cailot, 1829.

Something Better

I recently came across this old book, "Helpful Talks With Girls" published by the Christian Herald, 1910. It's one of those collections of advice and etiquette aimed towards young women, filled with the usual essays on avoiding saloons and tobacco shops and the like. To be fair, there are also many pages offering advice on finding respectable work, the importance of a good education, and leaving the world a better place that you find it.

What caught my eye was the writing I found on the front endpaper:

"There has to be more than this..."

You were right, Mary Todd, and more to come. I hope all of us are still wondering.

Rose Petal Sandwiches

Haven't had an inscription or a bookplate here in a while, consider this two for one.

To Mildred, my dearest
Who just told me of rose petal sandwiches - and of many other wonderful things.
Ever her loving
Toto (?)

The book is "Culinary Herbs and Condiments" by M. Grieve. Published by Harcourt, Brace, 1934

Lord

Souvenir photo. Written on reverse: "Tennyson's Birthplace - Somersby"

Found in "Idylls of the King" by Alfred Tennyson. Published by Edward Moxon, 1859.

Also of note, this book came with an intriguing bookplate:

As much as I want it to be true, the William Wordsworth died in 1850, well before this book was published.

Useless

Bookplate, 5 inches by 2.5 inches.

So long as wel love, we serve. So long as we are loved by others I would almost say we are indispensable; and no man is useless while he has a friend.

-Robert Louis Stevenson
