Friday Giveaway: The American Cyclopedia - contest closed

This week's giveaway includes volumes 1 through 7 of "The New American Cyclopedia" edited by George Ripley and Charles A. Dana. Published by D. Appleton and Co., 1863. Sadly, there are sixteen volumes in the full set, so you'll be getting just the first half. The volumes are bound in three-quarter brown leather with gilt lettering on the spine. They have marbled endpapers are in fairly good condition for their age.

Keep On Writing

I found this letter and matching envelope tucked in a copy of "If This Be Treason" by Margaret Echard. The letter is from Echard, answering a letter from a fan of her writing:

Jan 7 '46

Dear Margaret Johansen,

Thank you for your Christmas greetings and the nice things you said about the books. It is always heart warming to an author to hear from a reader like you. My only other book beside the ones you mention is "Before I Wake." Have you had that one yet? I hope to have a new one out before too long.

I wish I could give you an infallible rule for success in writing. I know but one. If you feel the urge, write and keep on writing. There is no short cut.

Only In My Dreams

This is the photo I was going to post before I found the Carrie Fisher card.

Turns out these two inspired a nightmare.

I woke up Monday morning with a very clear narrative about this set of blonde twins, abandoned by their mother in an isolated rural town. The locals quickly adopted them both, as they were the most beautiful children anyone had ever seen. Their beauty hid a psychotic evil, however, and as they grew up, they consumed all the kindness, all the humanity around them (I have also been watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer recently). After a few generations, the entire town were all blonde inbred psychopaths. Yeah, lovely stuff.

I had forgotten about the photo I had found a few days earlier, so this dream seemed to come out of nowhere and kind of freaked me out. Now it makes sense.

The photo was found in "Ten Days' Wonder" by Ellery Queen. Published by Little, Brown and Co., 1948.

Man's Fate Is Delicious

Recipe for cheese cake:

II)

1 lb cottage cheese
3 egg yolks
3 tbs. flour
1 c. sugar
pinch salt
1/2 c. milk

Beat egg whites until stiff fold into batter

Bottom:

I)

1/2 c. butter or crisco and cream with 1/3 c. sugar, 1 egg and 1 cup flour, 1 t. vanilla.

Pour batter in and bake 350 degrees 45 min until done (shake, if solid it is done)

Friday Giveaway: "Through The Looking Glass" - contest closed

This week's giveaway is just one book, but it's a lovely one. Lewis Carroll's "Through The Looking Glass" published by Altemus, 1897. This volume has the Tenniel illustrations, a few of which are in full color. Sadly, the binding is not the best, but what it lacks in structural integrity it makes up for with charm.

Your Worshipfulness

Just found this one this morning. I almost missed it, the book was headed to the fifty cent section when this dropped out:

Index card with what appears to be the signature of Carrie Fisher.

On the reverse side, someone has written "Actress" in black ink.

I have no idea if it's authentic, but it looks a lot like other signatures out there. That, and it was found in "The Empire Strikes Back" by Donald Glut. Published by Ballantine, 1980.
