It&#39;s akin to losing family members, when you lose books (especially older ones with a history of their own) that you have a relationship/history with. One alternative, in lieu of throwing the remnants of the damaged books away (if that is indeed what you intend) is to sell them/donate them either to a community college art program, or attempt to sell them on craigslist/ebay. There is quite a few people making their living by making original journals (both blank &amp; lined) by rebinding blank notebooks with covers of antique books, the more damage &amp; character the better.
