My guess would be stock gestures used in acting. Well into the twentieth century, Sophia Loren remembers her first acting classes being about learning to "make faces".

These look very much like directions I remember in a turn-of-the-last-century book (probably either "The American Girl's Handy Book" or "Things a Girl Can Make and Do") for producing "tableaus"...
